OUR HISTORY

Following the migration of Jews during the 1930s from the East End of London to the suburbs, the local Jewish community in Chingford decided to establish a Synagogue in the area.

The Shul opened in 1937 and over the next 20 years grew rapidly as the community went from strength to strength.

Naturally, during the war years, memberships declined to around 120 but a rapid return of former members and a steady influx of new families in the post-war years, saw growth which brought the total to over 300.  The impetus then built to expand the Shul.  In 1949, a Building Fund Committee was set up to raise the necessary funds for the construction of a classroom block and communal centre on the plot of land adjacent to the Synagogue which had been purchased through the good offices of Dr. H Blair and Mr. P Stitcher.

The vision and unremitting endeavours of Mr. M Rosenberg, Mr. H Greenfield and Dr. H Blair, together with the hard working committee, resulted in quickly raising the sum required in order for the work to commence, and in March 1953 the foundation and cornerstones of the new classroom block were laid at an impressive ceremony.  This was quickly followed by a large gathering who witnessed the consecration and opening of the new classrooms on 7th June 1953. This was performed by Dayan Dr. M Lee B.A. and Mr. S Romer in the presence of many distinguished civilian and religious leaders.

By the 1960s, the Shul boasted a membership of over 400 families. It was the fulcrum of the local Jewish people, creating a community that was incredibly close-knit. The Synagogue was also fortunate to have a large Chedar, with up to 100 children attending classes. There were thriving committees, clubs, a parents’ association, afternoon gatherings, JACs and AJEX, all of which led to a community which was charitable, enthusiastic, supportive and caring for their Shul.

In 1968 a hall was built to the side of the Synagogue and the classrooms were moved behind the main building.  The hall has been a major asset to the community as it has provided a space for many celebrations over the years.  There are kiddushim held each week, many sponsored by members to reflect important occasions.  The hall has seen many happy events including, Bar mitzvahs, Bat mitzvahs, wedding and anniversary celebrations, shows, quizzes, concerts, lectures and even table tennis.  Most importantly the community has gathered for Channukah parties, Seder nights and many other religious festival events.

In March 2013 the Shul changed its status as an affiliated community and became a full constituent member of The United Synagogue.

We were honoured with a visit from The Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks in November 2007 who joined us in celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Shul’s foundation.  We were also overjoyed to be able to have Sir Ephraim Mirvis as our guest of honour when the Synagogue celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2017. We are now looking forward to the 90th festivities in 2027.

Whilst memberships have declined over recent years, due to demographic change, we are now seeing an upturn in numbers including welcoming new families with children.
